Molly Marine Rios

The city of New Orleans dedicated the first United States monument of a woman in service uniform: “Molly Marine” on 10Nov, 1943.  A local recruiter commissioned the statue to help recruit women during World War II. For female Marines around the world, Molly has come to represent the countless significant contributions women have made to the Corps. She proudly stands for endurance, the book she holds records our history, the binoculars allow her to see into the future and she looks up steadfast facing all that comes her way. Molly has become a symbol of Esprit de Corps for all women Marines. Before graduation from boot camp, the recruits are asked to name one fellow recruit within their platoon who best exemplifies being a Marine. Here, we celebrate our newest sisters.

The title of Molly Marine is a privilege and honor to earn. It signifies unselfishness, dedication and positivity. A Molly Marine is someone who helps others without thinking twice, and leading by example. A Molly Marine tries to do what is right even when no one is watching and influences others to do the same. Evidentially, a Molly Marine promotes teamwork through her efforts in helping her peers. That in turn can be seen as leading by example. In order to be an effective leader, you have to earn the respect of the ones around you by setting the example and live by a good moral code.

No one is perfect, so a Molly Marine might not be the fastest runner, or the physically strongest one in the platoon but she does what she can to seek self-improvement, while helping those around her. A Molly Marine is human like everyone else so although things may look fine and squared away, on the outside she has many obstacles to overcome both mentally and physically. There is always room for growth and self-improvement. A Molly Marine is someone who cares about her peers well being and will put others before herself.

Everyone has the ability to be a leader, just as everyone has the potential to be a Molly Marine but few take advantage of their capabilities and use them for the benefit of others. Many struggle with the concept of working as a team or don’t see how heavily we must rely on each other to get the mission done. Earning the title of Molly Marine says a lot about a persons’ character. Some may think it takes a lot but in actuality it just takes one person to care enough to do what is right and not be selfish.
